Speed, security and versatility are just three reasons why Q&R Events is using Portable Space flat packs as a key element in its growing hospitality business.

Specialising in staging unique events across the UK, the company works with a range of structures which can be installed swiftly and customised to complement their surroundings.

Now added to the portfolio are flat packs which can be kitted out as bars, kitchens or food servery stations at events ranging from family celebrations to corporate hospitality, as well as instantly expanding facilities at pubs and restaurants.

Using 3m and 4m flat packs allows the company to install units where there is restricted access and delivery by an HGV and crane is impractical. The kiosks can also be installed quickly and efficiently in locations such as city centres where there are limited turnaround times.

Founded by Managing Director Ed Hunter, Q&R Events was established in 2018 and grew in popularity during the pandemic with the huge increase in outdoor entertaining and hospitality.

Ed said: “The Portable Space flat pack range is a truly superb product that can be installed quickly and offers great flexibility and customisation for the fast-paced creative event build world we work in. The kiosk is a particular favourite, the out-of-the-box gas strut hatch and locking mechanisms are worth the cost alone.”

A global provider of security detection and automation systems needed a modular building to house welfare facilities for its production team, incorporating a canteen, male and female toilets, and a changing room with lockers and showers.

L3 Harris is part of the Leidos Group and was relocating to a newly-built manufacturing outlet in Bedford where the additional facilities would be required and would be sited inside a warehouse.

The Portable Space team set to work to design a modular building which would house the different areas, using four 20 ft units.

Danny Napier, Senior Modular Projects Manager said: “Two representatives from L3 Harris contacted us to enquire about modular accommodation needed for its new outlet and after producing designs and costings, we were awarded the contract.

“Everything went to plan and the whole process was a positive experience, largely because our contacts Hash and Daniel were such a pleasure to deal with. The timeline of the project meant we were able to install the units ahead of the lockdown even though we had to wait until we were allowed to return to site once restrictions were lifted to finish everything off.”

Hash Vadolia from L3 Harris added: “I’d like to thank Portable Space for the excellent modular product, made to our required specification and delivered on time. Particular thanks to Danny Napier and his team for providing a top notch service and completing the project even with the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown”.

Flat pack kiosks make the ideal solution for increasing covers and serving outdoor customers for bars, restaurants and pubs throughout the UK. The Kings Arms in Haughley have demonstrated the versatility of flat pack containers by adding a stone-baked pizza oven and bar into theirs.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK, the hospitality industry was severely affected and extensive closures left many on their knees. A lifeline was granted with the “Eat Out to Help Out” initiative in Summer 2020, and pubs and restaurants were able to open their doors once again – but there was a catch. It wasn’t long before they could only serve food outdoors, and many had to scramble around to find appropriate solutions to ensure they had enough capacity to warrant being open.

For our local pub, The King’s Arms in Haughley, there was the space to do something creative to help them increase the number of covers they could offer. We wanted to help out as much as we could, knowing how badly they had been affected. As such, we worked with the owners to get one of our flat pack kiosks installed into their beer garden.

The benefits of the flat pack kiosks are their low costs (compared with other permanent structures), how easily they can be installed, the speed with which they can be erected, and the minimal maintenance they require once they are up-and-running. As such, using a flat pack container was the ideal solution for The King’s Arms. They added to this space with a built-in stone-baked pizza oven and versatile bar, creating not only more space, but also a whole new menu for locals and passing visitors to enjoy.

The new cooking and serving space was a huge success, especially on hot sunny days, and is therefore here to stay as a permanent outdoor serving space for meals and drinks. As such a sturdy solution, it will be able to weather many storms (unlike gazebos and other temporary structures) to ensure it remains in use for years to come.

Specialist Team Keeps Project On The Rails https://www.portablespace.co.uk/case-studies/railscape-jackleg-cabins Sun, 13 Dec 2020 12:30:35 +0000 https://www.portablespace.co.uk/?post_type=case_study&p=11041 Portable Space overcome delivery and installation challenges for linked jackleg cabins project

Creating two linked cabins for a Network Rail Signal Box to be used as a Simulator Training Unit in Cambridge was a straightforward project for the skilled Portable Space team – however, a site visit revealed some delivery and installation challenges.

Railscape provides the rail industry with a range of services – from arboriculture to fencing – and over the years has ordered a number of Jackleg Cabins to be used in various locations. Jackleg Cabins are timber-framed and plastisol-clad, with steel external support legs to allow for levelling on uneven surfaces.

Danny Napier, Senior Modular Projects Manager said: “We agreed with the client that the most cost-effective way to achieve the space needed was to link two single wide cabins together. Production went well but when we conducted a site visit, it quickly become apparent that the units were not going to fit through the access gate. Not only was the location restricted around a populated area, it was also adjacent to Student Accommodation.

“Thankfully our in-depth experience of accessing sites enabled us to devise an alternative way to put the units in place. With the assistance of expert hauliers and crane operators, together with Simon Cousins our Appointed Person, an evening delivery was arranged with an 11.00pm lift. Everything went perfectly to plan and the units were delivered, off-loaded and positioned within just four hours.”

Post-delivery, final linking, snagging and step installation was arranged which coincided with COVID-19 lockdown and so the final handover was completed in July 2020 with a very positive outcome.

Danny concluded: “Railscape’s team always has a flexible attitude to any challenges that emerge and our team worked closely with them to deliver a successful project with which they are delighted.”

Two sisters have seen their joint business ambitions come true with the opening of their new café, housed in a converted container.

Claire Lewis and Julia Coregan have launched the Lazy Llama Cafe, located near a community centre in Greenwood Park, Chiswell Green just outside St Albans, Herts. Open seven days a week, the outlet sells teas, coffees, homemade cakes and hot food to take away, or eat outside at the café’s picnic tables.

Central to the plan was the design of the 20ft shipping container to accommodate two areas separated by a hatch – a cooking area with stainless steel kitchen equipment and a sitting area with uPVC French doors. Due to the impact of Covid-19 social distancing measures, the indoor seating area isn’t yet open to customers, but does provide a useful additional area for staff and storage.

In terms of exterior appearance, porthole windows have been included to let light in and the entire container is covered in wood cladding.

Regulations demanded that the café met all food safety standards and was fully insulated to be suitable for all-year round use. Electronic roller shutters were installed over the doors for maximum overnight security.

Claire says: “Julia and I had already seen a unit like this and so we had a vision of how we wanted our café to look. We then worked closely with Ian and Lee at Portable Space to bring that vision to life.

“Lazy Llama is everything we wanted it to be and we’re delighted with the feedback we’ve received from our customers so far. Ian and the team were so easy to work with and always communicated well, which meant we felt supported throughout the project. Any small issues were rectified quickly.

“We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone else looking to plan a container conversion and we hope to use them again at some point in the future.”

Newquay Trampoline & Play Park has harnessed the benefits of using a range of Portable Space containers and cabins to provide essential facilities.

The Park offers an exciting selection of jumping activities for children aged 18 months to 12 years, including dive towers, crawl tubes, balance beams, a tree house and foam pits. There is also an area specially designed for babies and toddlers to explore sensory challenges and games.

Createability, the principal contractor for the Park and responsible for delivering the project for its client Greenwich Leisure (GLL), carried out a tender with several container conversion companies.

Portable Space won the contract on service and cost-effectiveness to provide high cube containers linked together to form the food preparation and servery areas; toilet blocks comprising male, female and disabled facilities as well as unisex toilet cubicles; and containers for playrooms, a briefing area and first aid room. Above the briefing room, play rooms and large toilet block, a mezzanine level viewing platform with access stairs and handrails was created.

Ian Stringer, Production Manager for Conversions at Portable Space says: “Createability had already been a principal contractor for this type of project, successfully using shipping containers to provide essential facilities.

“At Portable Space we were responsible for designing and building the interiors of the containers to meet the client specification, as well as creating the mezzanine deck level and handrails. All met the full safety requirements of building control.

“Having carried out the conversion in our on-site workshops, the installation went very smoothly and only needed a second visit to carry out the few structural changes made by the client to the overall design. The end user is very happy with the result and the park opened on-time for the summer holidays.”

Successful coordination of a wide range of in-house skills has resulted in Portable Space creating a new canteen for one of its regular customers, a major UK housebuilder.

Required for one of its current developments at Fresh Wharf in Barking, Essex, the canteen is now installed on-site, alongside a range of other temporary accommodation cabins including project offices, toilets, showers and drying facilities.

The canteen is a steel modular building which is robust and secure, ideal for strong working environments such as construction. The flexible system – with each module 3m wide – enabled the units to be joined side-by-side. The canteen’s attractive flat-sided external finish was painted in the company’s corporate colour.

Inside, the flexible space was fitted out with fixed chairs and tables. A separately-designed and constructed link-way enabled the additional canteen facility to be joined to the existing cabin set-up.

Portable Space’s Appointed Person prepared a comprehensive set of RAMs including Full Lifting Plan to enable a successful installation using haulage and cranes from both Portable Space and a sub-contractor.

Danny Napier, Modular Buildings Project Manager said: “This was a perfect example of harnessing all our in-house skills and close liaison between all departments to create and install a canteen, together with additional anti-vandal cabins, that met all our customer’s requirements. From drawings to delivery, we coordinated each stage and department, including electrics, painting and fitting out, so that it arrived on site, on-time and with minimal disruption to our client’s already busy programme.”

Extra office accomodation and more secure site storage was urgently needed by Culford School, based in Suffolk and Portable Space was able to provide exactly what was required.

Culford, an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls, had recently undergone a re-organisation of its maintenance yard, resulting in a shortage of dry, lockable storage for sports equipment.

The school ordered two storage containers for the sports equipment, as well as a 24ft jackleg cabin for use as additional office space. Jackleg cabins have adjustable legs which makes them ideal for situations where the ground may be uneven.

Jason Goodall, Commercial Manager at Culford School said: “Portable Space is a local company to us and were able to help with our need for additional accommodation and storage.

“Following a site survey, which confirmed restricted access for delivery, our two storage units were delivered and lifted over the side of a building into place using one of Portable Space’s specialist crane lorries. As we are a listed site, we then clad the units with timber so they blend with the background. We later took delivery of a further unit which we use for office space.

“Both products and customer service have been excellent and we are very happy with the solution provided by the company.”

The Hub, a specialist fit-out contractor solely for the museums, arts, heritage and culture industry, has delivered high quality projects for private and public sector clients for over a decade.

Appointed by the National Maritime Museum as Principal Contractor, The Hub was honoured to transform the heart of the Museum. Utilising in-house facilities and specialist sub-contractors, high quality visitor experiences were created in The Sammy Ofer Wing, The Stanhope Entrance, The Streets and The Upper Deck.

To deliver the design scheme, The Hub contacted Portable Space to fabricate and install a 40ft container, cut down to the specified size. The finished painted container was delivered to site where its journey continued with other specialist AV and graphics contractors. The container’s purpose is to showcase the history of transportation.

The Hub said: “We had heard about Portable Space through word of mouth. Having contacted them with an initial concept, their team produced detailed technical drawings and undertook several site visits to ensure everything would work as planned.

“We were impressed by their great attention to detail, with all works completed off-site prior to delivery. Installation only took a couple of hours because everything had been planned in advance with any potential problems ironed out.

“Portable Space is a great company to deal with; they are diligent and plan each stage carefully to ensure everything goes smoothly. It was a good experience working together.”

An increase in the number of pupils and the need for additional classroom accommodation led to a Suffolk school contacting Portable Space to see if they could help.

There were a number of challenges to be faced at Creeting St Mary CEVP School – a tight deadline to be ready for the start of the new term in September, installation whilst lessons were still in progress and restricted access for the delivery of the unit.

All were overcome thanks to the team at Portable Space and Headteacher Christine Friar says the process was ‘smoother’ than she had envisaged and the classroom itself is ‘so much nicer’ than they had imagined.

Before deciding what would work, Portable Space took the School Governors and Head to nearby Westley School so they could see at first hand what had worked for them.

After that planning began in detail to address the question of access. Creeting St Mary is a small village with very narrow roads and getting large lorries to the school would be difficult and not acceptable to local residents.

Following a detailed assessment, Portable Space suggested that one of its Euro Modular building range would be suitable, as it could be delivered on a short wheel-based vehicle in Flat Pack form and offloaded with a forklift truck and erected into final position.

Mrs Friar said: “We are so happy with our new classroom and the way it was handled by Portable Space. The building went up in no time and the team was so flexible and polite, we weren’t even aware they were there! Inevitably there were some additional requests and changes along the way which they were able to accommodate where possible.

“The end result is a light and airy classroom with its own sink and toilet area. Even the aftercare service was good. We found that the ramp leading to the classroom became a little slippery and so the team returned to coat it with a paint finish to make it safer.”

The project for Creeting St Mary CEVP School included Portable Space helping with Planning, Building Regulations and fire approvals, drainage and foundations, mains service supply and connections and installing a fire alarm, air conditioning, ramp and steps.
