Container conversions are practical solution for welfare and storage

Sector
Public Sector, Healthcare & Facilities Management

The need for a staff welfare unit for its Grounds Maintenance team led Bury Cemetery to purchase two shipping containers conversions from Portable Space.

Key drivers were cost-effectiveness and fast turnaround. The container conversions also scored highly in providing a more space-efficient solution to the existing facilities, as well as low maintenance.

Kieren Stuck, Building Surveyor for St Edmundsbury Borough Council explains: “We needed a facility that could house a small kitchenette, shower and toilets for our staff as well as a public disabled toilet with a radar lock. In addition, secure storage for our tools and materials was required and we were able to install shelves to help organise the interior. We also wanted a solution that could blend in with the surroundings and were able to use cladding on the outside of the units and install solar panels to boost the electrical supply for hot water and showers.

“We like to use local companies where we can and found Portable Space which is based near to us in Suffolk. This was the first time we had worked with them and we were impressed by the team’s knowledge and the service they provided. There was only a tight space to play with but the two 20ft x 8ft container conversions fitted perfectly.

“A major plus was the delivery and installation part of the project which was carried out very smoothly by Portable Space’s own in-house team. They have their own fleet of vehicles, with lifting equipment, operated by trained drivers which was very reassuring.”
